Hello There Stranger…

In do people really DO that?, technology on March 31, 2009 at 8:37 pm

… who knew talking to strangers could be so fun. Well it depends on the stranger of course and there are some that you really should NOT talk to (per your parents advice from when you were 3).  But, I have just had the most delightful go-round with a complete stranger today, and yes I use that term delightful loosely!

My friend was kind enough to send me some afternoon entertainment today. 1) was the trailer for Where the Wild Thing Are, click to see 2) This footage of a girl fainting (seriously funny), click to see and 3) This site: http://omegle.com where you can talk to complete strangers.

Oh my goodness it is interesting. One conversation covered everything from after-life, to abortion, to music. Yes, sometimes it is completely boring, like the time the “Stranger” asked my name and I told them George and then they just disconnected me. But, that alone was sort of entertaining, I mean WHAT is so bad about GEORGE!? It was a practice in rejection that is for sure. For every conversation I had I was disconnected two times and I disconnected at least 3 “Strangers”.

But it all paid off when my last chat turned up a “Stranger” with the most interesting habit of shoving fruit up his bum. AND then when he asked me if I had any hobbies, I simply replied “oh I ski”. He was looking for something a bit more “extravagant” and when I told him I didn’t have any nearly as interesting as being a fruitiphile, he called me “elegantly boring”. Which I have to say just made me warm and fuzzy all over.

Stranger, you can call me elegant any day… even if it is a poorly veiled insult.

Inappropriately small spinning shorts

In do people really DO that? on March 25, 2009 at 6:41 pm

… I went spinning this morning and the guy who taught the class had a mangina.  He was wearing these tiny tiny non-padded spandex shorts and I have no idea where his junk was. I just stared at it the whole time, thinking sex change? tucked under? WHERE IS IT!

For awhile I really thought he had, had a sex change, until he said he had a wife; which I am 90% sure he worked into his routine BECAUSE I was staring at his junk the whole class. I am sure also looking very puzzled.

Getting bumped is good…

In Free Stuff Can Be Frustrating on March 24, 2009 at 9:07 pm

… and no I am not talking about knocking the boots. I mean bumped in the good old fashion airline way. I managed to get myself not 1, but 2 free round trip tickets this past weekend. Usually I am not one to offer up my seat on a plane, but this weekend it worked out to my advantage. My outbound trip was shot anyway, due to a delay in air travel. So I volunteered my seat … free ticket. Then on my return flight, I had a 4 hour delay in Chicago, so I figured why not. So instead I sat in Fort Meyers and Hotlanta for 2 hours each. Got in 24 minutes after my originally scheduled arrival time and… FREE TICKET.

Yes, if I’d known all this before leaving for the airport, I could have enjoyed most of the day on the beach. But I was already doomed to a 4 hours wait in Chicago, why not parlay that into a free ticket. At this rate, I could start planning for this, add an extra day of travel to my trip, compensating for lost vacation time, and then continually get bumped off of my flights. The way airlines run these days, I could never pay for air travel again. It could be an ongoing cycle of sucky customer service and me benefiting. Hallelujah!

Phew… but here is the real question… Do you see the flaw in my plan? Its glaringly obvious once you spot it. Clearly if these airlines have that hard of a time getting their shit together… I will never get anywhere and if I do actually arrive, I won’t have my allotted time for actual enjoyment of the trip. I’ll spend all my time pretending to read my book club books in the airport and no time actually at my destination.

It’s a give and take really.

… ladies and gentlemen my new sink

new-sink

Yesterday, I got a new kitchen sink…

In family on March 18, 2009 at 3:46 pm

… oh good lord what a process. My father was kind enough to give me a new kitchen sink for my birthday. My birthday is September 1st. Yes, it is March 18th. So here I am at 5PM off to Lowes, 6 and a half months after my birthday, thinking this is a quick in and out and I can be at book club by 7PM. Fat chance.

I must have hit my head and forgotten the last 30 yrs of my life, because my father does nothing quickly. We made 2 trips to both Lowes and Home Depot before we made it home at 8PM with a new sink. I should say that even though the man likes to take  his time, he and his wife were very patient and helpful with my somewhat wishy-washy decision making. And I am actually glad they didn’t just let me settle for the sink at Lowes. The one I ended up with, which was from the Depot, is better.

So now, as I write from my somewhat comfortable office chair, they labor away at my condo putting in my new sink. I think I owe them a real nice bottle of wine….

This morning I was listening to VPR…

In Wouldn't it be Grand on March 11, 2009 at 7:30 pm

… from my bathroom, while it was playing in my bedroom. Phone drive again… BORING. Then all the sudden I could have sworn I heard them say “and New Hampshire’s muffle muffle is a real boy”.  All I could think is what? … “New Hampshire’s Pinocchio is now a REAL BOY!” How grand New Hampshire has its very own fairy tale come true; Pinocchio is a living, breathing, dancing real boy. That old man that made him must be SO HAPPY!

Wouldn’t that be something; what’s next Captain Hook is yet again out smarted by the wily Peter Pan or the Little Mermaid surfaces on the rocks of Oakledge Park?!

But alas no such luck. I don’t know about you but, personally, I think life would be  more bearable if my bitchy client actually WAS Cruella Deville or the Wicked Witch of the West. Not only do they have reason for their displeasure with, well, everything, Ms. Deville has a fabulous coat and Witchy a damn sweet ruby red shoes (at least until that Dorothy came along).

But let’s not forget the real up side of fairy tale characters walking around in the mix! Finally, the hopeless romantics who fell in love with Prince Charming at age 7, might actually stand a chance at meeting that blond haired, chainmaille-clad stud muffin…. arf! (Ha, don’t hold your breath ladies.)

Hummm… sounds so much more fun than my days been.

People and their beds…

In do people really DO that? on March 5, 2009 at 8:49 pm

… It recently came to my attention that a friend was house-sitting. Something usually done for little or NO money as a favor to the homeowner. Even if animals are involved, the amount paid is usually so minuscule that the only reason the house-sitter agrees to the arrangement is 1. they are homeless, 2. the house itself is pimp, or 3. the homeowner is a very dear friend or relative.

So given all of the above, why in gods* name would you ask some one to house-sit for you and then tell them they can’t sleep in your bed? And then insist they sleep on YOUR COUCH?!

Atrocious.

*While I am using this expression “in gods name” to get my point across, I do not see anything holy about the situation at hand.

Dan Smith for Mayor

In Burlington, VT, politics on March 3, 2009 at 8:44 pm

… Today I voted for my good friend Dan Smith for Mayor of Burlington. I truly hope he wins. While I am not an overly political person, I think he added a great energy to the campaign and kept everyone on their toes. He’s gotten out there and involved people that otherwise may have let the election slide without a second thought.

Its been great to see him walk through this process, from making the decision to run, straight through to today, election day. Its had its challenges and successes and he’s taken them in stride. I think he’ll make a great leader for the Burlington community. I am excited to see what happens tonight!

Good Luck Dan!

Snow, it makes me happy…

In vermont, wearing white on March 2, 2009 at 4:36 pm

… Last Tuesday was the best day on the mountain I’ve had this year. Fresh tracks in goat woods, lookout woods and off the planets. It was a blast and I felt stronger than I had all season. Then the following three days it warms up and rains… mother f@##%&^.

But it is snowing again and life is good. Let’s hope today accumulates and tomorrows promised winds don’t lead to closed lifts. While I wait to find out, I will be grinning all day long.
